LISA A. FREED M.D. - Women & Heart Disease and Echocardiography.
Dr. Freed is board certified in Cardiology and Echocardiography. She comes to our
group after 8 years of experience practicing Cardiology in the New Haven area, with
special interests in women's heart disease and valvular heart disease (including
mitral valve prolapse).
She is an active member of the medical community and is an assistant clinical professor
of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Freed is a founding member
and co-chair of Yale New Haven Hospital's Women's Heart Advantage Program.

Saint Raphael’s joins Keep the Beat campaign
To help educate the Greater New Haven community about sudden cardiac arrest
and the importance of early defibrillation, the Hospital of Saint Raphael has joined
the nationwide Keep the Beat campaign. Launched by Medtronic, Inc. — a world leader
in medical technology — Keep the Beat aims to increase awareness and raise funds
to place automated external defibrillators in schools throughout the country. This
summer, Medtronic is a sponsor of singer/songwriter James Taylor’s U.S. tour. Saint
Raphael’s participated in the campaign’s kick off at Taylor’s recent performance at
the Meadows Music Theater in Hartford. Pictured are (from left) John Drury, M.D.,
associate section chief of Cardiology, and electrophysiologist Eric Grubman, M.D.,
at Saint Raphael’s information booth during the concert. Saint Raphael provided
concertgoers with information on cardiovascular disease, its risk factors, symptoms
and treatment options. Saint Raphael’s statewide sponsorship of Keep the Beat is
part of a broad community-focused campaign the hospital’s Cardiac Institute plans
to launch next month. The multi-faceted campaign will focus on establishing collaborative
efforts to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease, improve healthcare quality,
and eliminate health disparities.

has just joined Cardiology Associates of New Haven. He completed his fellowship
in cardiovascular medicine at Yale in June 2005. He has special training in
nuclear cardiology and reading echocardiograms. He is seeing patients in all
offices, but is concentrating his time in our Orange office. Please see his
biography in the Provider section of this website.
In May 2005, CANH moved
its Orange office into new, larger offices at 325 Boston Post Road,

Saint Raphael's performs
staters first catheter cryoablation procedure
Saint Raphael cardiologists can now repair arrhythmias by freezing affected
areas of the heart.
Saint Raphael's became the first hospital in Connecticut to perform catheter cryoablation
- a new procedure that allows physicians to use cryogenic technology to accurately
locate the cause of an irregular heartbeat. This procedure is an alternative to
traditional radio frequency ablation, which uses heat to repair dysfunctional heart
tissue.
During catheter cryoablation, physicians use a special catheter to locate and freeze
targeted areas of the heart to about minus 25 degrees Celsius. If the frozen tissue
area is not the cause of an arrhythmia, it can be restored with no permanent damage.
Once the faulty heart tissue is positively identified, physicians permanently repair
the arrhythmia by further freezing the affected area to minus 75 degrees Celsius.

allows us to test suspected trouble areas without risking permanent damage”, said
Eric Grubman, M.D., the Saint Raphael's cardiologist who recently performed the
procedure. "Compared to other traditional methods, this allows for a greater degree
of precision - especially when working around critical structures of the heart."
Catheter cryoablation is safe for most patients. The procedure usually takes about
two hours, and is generally performed on an outpatient basis. most cases, patients
can return to normal activities within a few days. As a leader in all facets of
cardiac care, Saint Raphael's offers comprehensive services ranging from prevent
to rehabilitation. Services include cardiac diagnostics, diagnostic and interventional
cardiology; bypass surgery; valve replacement; implantable pacemaker and defibrillators;
treatment of congestive heart failure; and cardiac rehabilitation. Saint Raphael's
recently became the first hospital in Connecticut to offer Stereotaxis - a technique
that uses computer-controlled magnetic fields to steer catheters and other instruments
through the chambers of the heart. It is also home to Connecticut's first Heart
Emergency Center.

Nuclear
Laboratory Benefits Heart Patients in New Haven Area
NEW HAVEN, CT (November 13, 2002) – Cardiology Associates of New Haven has been
named an accredited Nuclear Cardiology Laboratory by the Intersocietal Commission
for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL). This accreditation
recognizes the group’s commitment to high-quality patient care and its provision
of quality diagnostic testing.
Nuclear cardiology
studies are noninvasive diagnostic tests that assess the heart’s blood flow and
pumping function while the patient is at rest and during exercise. Unlike still
photos from an X-ray, CT scan or MRI, and unlike traditional EKGs that print out
cardiac patterns on paper, nuclear cardiology studies allow doctors to see actual
moving blood flow and blockages with the help of a small amount of an imaging agent
administered intravenously into the bloodstream. Physicians are able to detect the
presence and severity of cardiovascular disease or blockage in the arteries or heart
muscle, and can see the exact size and location of a heart attack and assess risk
of future heart attack. This is particularly helpful in identifying patients who
are at increased risk for heart attack.
Heart disease is
widely recognized as the leading cause of death in America. Each year more than
half a million men and women in this country die from coronary artery disease. According
to ICANL, one American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease, disorders
of the heart and blood vessels.
